Kinja'd!!!

I knew absolutely nothing about this show until I started watching it on Hulu yesterday. At first, I thought it was just going to be a send up of all the various generations of Star Trek. A few episodes in, I realize that it’s actually a solid space exploration show in its own right, with good stories and interesting characters. And I love the snarky tone. So now I’m binging it.

Glad now there’s more people watching it.

Allegedly the first season Seth had to sell it to Fox a “Family Guy in Space” for it to be approved , season two is where things take a deeper turn.

I watched it when it came out, the first few episodes I was addicted to, then it sort of ell away, but I pushed through and it got better.

I’ve not seen any of the second series even though it’s been out a while, I ’ve not been interested to watch it (just like TopGear and The Grand Tour).

that’s what made it work for me, honestly. it wasn’t really “Family Guy in space;” it did have it’s bits of silly humor but it wasn’t a constant barrage.

After they got into their groove, I think the best description I read of it was “it’s like Star Trek, but with real people.”

We just watched the social media episode (Majority Rules). I thought it was fantastic, and I’m going to show it to my boys.

Star trek Discovery never convinced me to get cbs all access. But Orville will convince me to get Hulu.

Orville feels like it's made by someone that loves sci-fi the same way I do.

Yeah, it’s actually a really good Star Trek. I thought it was going to be campy but it  really isn’t. Sure, there's some really funny stuff in it, but it's a solid show.

Orville is reportedly much better received than canon Star Trek, like Discovery... and remains to be see how Picard does... but the new Trek series seem to be generated for revenue and thinly-veiled negative political commentary, not Trek’s traditional optimism and hope, and aren’t gaining much traction, while Orville does connect with the Trek fandom.

I know I enjoyed the Orville quite a bit... a few bumps along the way, but good solid TV, and fun/funny rather than painfully serious or dour. I have no interest whatsoever in Star Trek Discovery, and not enough in Picard to even slightly consider paying CBS for All Access.

I am a bit disappointed that Orville is no longer going to be free over the air for upcoming Season 3, it will be Hulu only, not broadcast on Fox. That after Disney bought that section of Fox, and now Seth McFarlane is going to NBC otherwise, but is still doing Orville on Hulu, not airing on Fox.

I even saw one rumor or suggestion that McFarlane/NBC may be trying to buy the rights for Star Trek from ViacomCBS. (the original 1966 Roddenberry series Star Trek produced by Desilu was on NBC), but who knows...

I am debating whether it is worth adding a third streaming service, Hulu, to Amazon and Netflix... but Orville might push it into consideration.
